About Lloyd Nicholson & his Artwork

Lloyd is an artist living on Salt Spring Island off the coast of British Columbia.

I am creating a new category work medium (acrylic plexiglass) to express my art. Some of this work can be viewed from both sides, each with its own distinct look. I bring my technical background as a certified Journeyman painter & incorporate that into this new medium in a completely innovative way.

I also am creating faux "mineralizations" on plexi-glass and MDF that take faux techniques, & how we think of the "real thing", to new levels. I am presently producing faux quartz, translucent like alibaster, and large sheets of faux amber that are impossible in size and finishing. These faux mineralizations are being used as "inlays" for coffee, end tables, side or hall tables, and divider screens. Framing and furniture items are built locally & use mostly local wood varieties.

Why do I use plexiglass as opposed to glass? The reasons are technical, but, in a nutshell, I prefer to work with acrylic paints, & they bind beautifully to plexiglass, given the right application techniques. If I worked on glass I would need to switch to oils, & they would not stand up well to sunlight and would chalk & change colour over time.

Labels do not come easily to my art work, but there are few people in the whole world working on plexiglass. While abstract and free flowing, I am confident of my skills at mixing and layering and imbuing the work with emotion. I find some of the finished work quite hypnotic; the more you look at it, the more you want to fall into it & be a part of it.

Much of my inspiration has come in the past from global satelite images of the cosmos, down to pictures of the microscopic; how nature can look similar from these two vastly different viewpoints is intriguing & baffling, but they often do! My challenge to myself has been in recreating these forms & produce an emotional response from them.

By producing abstract forms that have their origins in nature, I hope to connect us back to our rightful place as beings' in nature, rather than "rulers" of it.

At present, I am only exhibiting my work on Salt Spring Island, but hope again soon to re-enter the Victoria and Vancouver markets.
